Install Webmin on Ubuntu 8.04

I installed Ubuntu on a second machine earlier this week as a small file server as I’m gearing up to format and reinstall my main computer. As normal with my Linux servers it will run headless with just a power cord and a network cable attached.

One thing I cheat with on my headless machines (at home, never on a production server) is installing Webmin. It is great if you know what you are doing since Webmin gives you an incredible amount of power. I SSHed into the box and fired off the aptitude command to install Webmin.

There is no Webmin package in the Ubuntu repositories. I have no idea why, but it is not there. So, who do you get it installed?

Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 2 Released

Ubuntu has released the newest alpha version of Gutsy Gibbon. Gibbon will have Compiz Fusion (the newest release since Compiz and Beryl merged) enable by default, along with all of the enhancements of Feisty Fawn.

Ubuntu 7.10 Alpha 1 Released

The Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 1 is the first alpha release of Ubuntu 7.10, and with this new alpha release comes a whole host of excellent new features. Browsing Safely On The Road

I recently went on two trips, a wedding and then a business trip, and both involved getting internet access at the hotel. The hotel we stayed at at the wedding had free wireless internet, which was completely unencrypted and definately visable from the other hotels grouped around it. The second hotel had strictly wired internet which required me to sign up. Neither of them really gave me a huge amount of confidence in them keeping my information safe. What does one do? If you have broadband and a dynamic DNS account (I suggest DynDNS.org, I’ve used them for years without a problem), you have some options!
